Where your ideas go to die

The good ideas do not show up at the desk. They show up driving, in the chair, in the shower, at 11pm. They get typed into whatever was open, and then they are gone, because a note nobody ever re-reads is the same as no note.

The real problem is not capture

Everybody already captures. There are ideas in your texts to yourself, three note apps, a voice memo, and the back of a receipt. The problem is that there are seven inboxes and nothing ever comes back out of any of them.

One inbox, whatever it is

Pick the one you will actually reach for with one hand while walking. Do not optimize this. The best capture tool is the one already on your home screen. Everything goes there. Half-formed is fine. Voice is fine.

The Friday pass is the whole system

Fifteen minutes, once a week, and every idea gets exactly one of four fates: do it now because it is under two minutes, schedule it, file it as "someday" on purpose, or delete it.

Deleting is the one people cannot do, and it is the one that makes the rest work. An idea list you are afraid to delete from becomes a list you are afraid to open.

Run this on your list every Friday Here's everything I dumped into my notes this week: [PASTE]. Group them, then for each one tell me: do it now (under 2 minutes), schedule it, park it as someday, or delete it. Be aggressive about delete. Then give me the three that would actually move my business and ask me which one I'm doing Monday.

Say the idea out loud instead of typing it

Talking is faster than typing for almost everybody, and a half-formed idea survives being spoken better than it survives being typed with one thumb at a red light. Record the mess and let the cleanup happen on Friday.

The honest part

This system is not clever and that is why it works. Every version of it that involves a database, six tags, and a weekly automation gets abandoned in three weeks. One inbox and a Friday survives, because on a bad week it still only costs fifteen minutes.
