Turn on AI memory the safe way

Every AI app has two switches hiding in the same menu. One decides what it remembers about you. The other decides whether your chats get read and used to train the AI for everyone else. Most people only ever find the first one. Costs nothing to check both. Takes about two minutes.

Why this is two switches, not one

Memory means the AI keeps facts about you between chats, so you stop repeating your business name and your hours every single time. Training means the company can use what you typed to teach the AI new things, and sometimes a real person reads your chat to check the work. You can have memory on and training off. That is the setup you want.

Nobody warns you these are separate. So people either turn memory off completely because the training part scared them, or they turn memory on and never notice the training toggle sitting right next to it. Do both. Here is where each one lives.

ChatGPT

1. Turn memory on. Tap your name or the three dots, then Settings, then Personalization. Turn on "Reference saved memories" so it keeps facts you tell it, and "Reference chat history" so it can look back at old conversations.

2. Check the training switch. Still in Settings, go to Data Controls. Find "Improve the model for everyone" and turn it off. Off means your conversations stay yours. On means OpenAI can use them to train future versions.

Claude

1. Turn memory on. Tap your name, then Settings, then look for Memory or Personalization, depending on your plan. Turn it on and tell it the boring facts once: your business, your town, what you sell.

2. Check the training switch. In the same Settings menu, look under Privacy for something called "Help improve Claude" or similar. If it is off, leave it off. If it is on and you would rather your chats not be used for training, turn it off.

Gemini

1. Turn memory on. In the Gemini app, tap your profile picture, then Saved info or Personal context, and turn it on. This is where it keeps facts about you across chats.

2. Check the training switch. Go to Settings, then Gemini Apps Activity, sometimes reached through myactivity.google.com. This controls whether your chats are kept and can be reviewed by a person to improve the product. Turn it off if you do not want that.

Tell it the boring facts once memory is on My business is called [BUSINESS NAME], a [TYPE OF BUSINESS] in [CITY, STATE]. I sell [TOP SERVICES] to [WHO YOU SELL TO]. Remember this so I do not have to repeat it every time.

What this costs

Nothing. Every switch above is free on the free or paid tier of each app. This is a settings check, not a purchase.

One thing to remember

Check these two switches again if you ever install the app fresh, sign up for a new plan, or hand the phone to your kid to set up their own account. New sign-ups often default the training switch back on.
