Start with friction, not with AI
Most advice about AI starts with the tool. Try this app, learn this prompt, install this agent. That order is backwards, and it is the main reason people try five tools and stick with none of them.
The rule
Do not start with AI. Start with friction. Find what is actually slowing you down. Fix that. If AI is the best fix, use AI. If it is a process problem, fix the process instead.
Why this matters more than it sounds like it should
It protects you from buying a tool you do not need, which is the opposite of what most AI sellers want you to do. And it is the honest reason to trust a recommendation when AI actually is the answer, because the recommendation came after the problem, not before it.
Automating a task that never mattered just gets you a faster version of something that did not matter. The speed is not the point. The task has to be worth speeding up first.
How to find the real friction
Look for the thing you dread doing, the task you put off until it becomes urgent, or the question you answer the same way for the tenth customer this month. Those are the real candidates. A task you enjoy or only do once a year almost never is.
What this looks like in practice
A missed phone call is not fixed by a smarter phone. It is fixed by something that replies the second you cannot answer. A blank Google Business Profile is not fixed by AI at all, it is fixed by twenty minutes of typing into fields that already exist. Find the friction first and the right fix usually becomes obvious.

What a missed call actually costs
A real example of friction, priced out, with three of the actual text replies that fix it.
